O programa Colóquios da Nano tem a satisfação de anunciar um seminário especial a ser realizado na próxima quarta-feira, 12 de março de 2025, às 16h30, com a presença do Dr. Roger C. Hiorns, Diretor de Pesquisa do CNRS no IPREM – CNRS/UPPA, França. O Dr. Hiorns também atua como Editor de Revisões da revista Polymer International, é membro do Subcomitê de Terminologia de Polímeros da IUPAC e coordena o projeto EFFECTOR no âmbito das Ações de Inovação Horizon.

Taking fullerene to the next dimension: the syntheses of novel poly(fullerene)s for real-world applications

Resumo:
Since its discovery in 1985, fullerene has gone from being an exceedingly rare laboratory curiosity to being a facial cream additive on sale at Amazon. Similarly, this exceptional molecule has found its way into organic solar cells, and promises exciting results in the fight against bacteria. A consistent problem, however, is its poor handling due to its tendency to heavily aggregate in solution and in blends. Beneficially, a way to resolve this, while also improving and tuning its physical and electronic properties, is to incorporate fullerene into polymers.
This talk will show how fullerene can be used as part of a polymeric main-chain, and show how polyfullerenes can be beneficial in the very latest generations of organic solar cells and in perovskite solar cells, leading to increases in both efficiencies and stabilities. It will describe our most recent work in the area, looking at how these exciting new materials, polyfullerenes, might be used in the very latest photovoltaic technologies.
